The Transit Riders Union focuses on improving conditions for transit riders in the following areas:
- Quality of service – Amenities for riders onboard/at stops, speed and reliability, comfort, cleanliness, customer service, communications.
- Quantity of service – Service distribution (allocation/suspensions/cuts), equity, route planning, service frequency.
- Safety – Crime prevention onboard/at stops, Bus Buddies, code of conduct education and enforcement.
- Transit policy & advocacy – Advocacy work with elected officials, transit agency officials, and labor unions on behalf of transit riders.
- Accessibility & usability – Improve conditions for riders with disabilities, including standards-compliance, signage, maps, and audible/tactile features.
- Fares and fare policy – Simplification of fare system, Orca issues, fare payment (enter/exit/offboard) systems, fare increases, etc.
- Low-income and under-served/under-represented riders – Improving quality and quantity of service for transit-dependent communities, preserving and providing adequate fare/pass affordability for low-income riders and families, ensuring fair, dignified and equal treatment for all customers by transit agencies and staff.
- Special projects & services – Represent transit riders and mitigate impacts of Alaskan Way Viaduct, SR-520, Link expansion, and other large projects; other special projects (e.g. special event service) as appropriate.
- Technology and data access – Ensure adequate, standard, and transparent access to transit data for application developers, transit researchers, and other agencies.
